Hot Spot

Hot Spot A hot spot is formed when a dog has an itchy spot and he scratches it and scratches it some more and then chews at it a bit and then some more!

When all is said and done, the poor pooch is left with an open wound on his or her body and they are still picking at it! Another name for this condition is moist dermatitis.

These areas can get big very quickly so it is important to have them treated as soon as possible. They are prone to infection so need attention as soon as possible.

Initially the area needs to be clipped so that the air can get to the wound. Once this is done an antibiotic ointment can be applied and there are also medications to help dry out the area. Its always best to take your sheltie to the vet but if for some reason you can not there are some non-prescription medications available.
