Mange

Mange is often one of two types.....

sarcoptic or demodectic

Sarcoptic is caused by scabies. Scabies is the name of the parasite that creates the problem. A scabie infestation causes redness and elevation of the skin, there is no puss in the elevation. These areas are usually present on the elbow, ears, and back leg joint called the hock. Scratching causes hair loss and creates the risk for secondary infection.

Demodectic is due to an over population of a mite that normally occurs on the face of the dog. This mite is called Demodex canis.

When a dog is under a lot of stress or has a compromised immune system the mites may reproduce more rapidly. Mild cases may only produce redness in the skin, small pustules, or some hair loss. Hair loss usually occurs around the face.

More severe cases can cause more serious symptoms including deep infections and swollen lymph nodes. It is not usually contagious.

There are rinses to treat the condition; your vet will recommend the proper course of treatment.

The type is a description of where the problem occurs. Both are caused by parasites and are contagious.

For shelties and collies there is a disease called dermatomyositis that is sometimes misdiagnosed as this skin condition. A confirmed diagnosis does not rule out this disorder so be sure to ask your vet.
